In Germany, said that NATO needs missiles to strike at Russia

A German military expert called on NATO countries to modernize weapons to counter the entire "spectrum of threats" from Moscow. He particularly drew the attention of the European countries of the alliance to this. Russian experts also expressed concerns about the breakdown of the INF. At the same time, the Russian Federation is proposing that the US and NATO introduce a moratorium on missile deployment instead of this treaty.

Countries NATO should upgrade weapons, as of today, the alliance can not resist the whole "range of threats" from Moscow, he told the Süddeutsche Zeitung Expert German Society for Foreign Policy Christian Melling. First of all, he addressed his warning to European states in the organization. Melling is convinced that the Russian rocket 9M729 "within a few minutes can hit all European capitals except Lisbon."

“We Europeans are very vulnerable,” said the expert.

  • A political scientist admitted that 9M729 will not reach the mainland United States, but Washington should still pay attention to the development of weapons.

  • “The key question now is whether the Americans and their European partners will decide to modernize nuclear or non-nuclear weapons in order to be able to minimize Russia's deterrence potential,” he noted.

  • According to the expert, first of all, NATO should "respond in the field of non-nuclear weapons," that is, improve the air defense system (AD) in order to neutralize Russian missiles. “On the other hand, perhaps, an offensive component is also necessary: that is, missiles that could hit the Russian command centres,” Melling said.

  • Washington’s withdrawal from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF) was motivated by complaints about the 9M729 Russian missile system. According to the United States, the range of its action is beyond the scope of the contract, that is, is in the region from 500 to 5500 km. At the same time, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev assured that on the tests of 9M729 she flew no further than 476 km.

Despite these arguments and even demonstration of the rocket to foreign specialists, the United States continued to insist on its verifiable destruction.

  • “We couldn’t, in principle, consider the possibility of destroying the 9M729 missile, because this missile does not belong to the INF. The very posing of such a question by the United States was illegal, ”explained Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.

  • Fears about the end of the INF Treaty are expressed not only by Western but also by Russian experts. According to military expert Vladimir Yevseyev, whom he expressed at a round table at the Russia Today MIA on the situation with the INF Treaty, the United States can transfer part of its nuclear charges in Europe from aeroplanes to ground-based cruise missiles. This will create additional threats to Russia, even if Washington does not increase the number of these weapons, he noted. Evseev said that there are about 200 nuclear warheads in Europe now.

  • “If only air defense systems are enough to protect against delivery systems using aeroplanes, then if such nuclear charges are deployed on missiles, Russia will have to have more effective means to contain this threat or defeat them if necessary,” Yevseyev explained.

  • After the break of the INF Treaty, the parties began to consider various alternative options for military deterrence of the parties. Moscow has offered the United States and NATO to declare a moratorium on the deployment of the INF Treaty, as Russia has already done, Sergei Ryabkov told TASS. At the same time, the diplomat drew attention to the fact that the issue of returning to agreements on control over such systems “is not removed from the agenda”.

  • “We are not offering new negotiations to the Americans, it was clearly stated by the President of the Russian Federation on February 2 of this year. They offered the United States and other NATO countries to weigh the possibility of declaring the same moratorium on the deployment of medium and shorter-range means, like ours, like the moratorium that was announced by Vladimir Putin, who said that before the Americans appeared in a given region, Russia will refrain from locating our respective systems when they become available, ”Ryabkov stressed.

A few days before that, he noted that Russia does not exclude the possibility of deploying the INF of the USA not far from The USA if Washington takes such action.

Ryabkov called flight time "key moment".

The Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that the moratorium on the deployment of missiles is still in effect, but the United States and NATO have a “super-easy attitude” to international security.

The INF action was terminated on August 2 at the initiative of the United States. “The blame for this is entirely on the American side. It was the United States who became the gravediggers of the treaty. They launched and completed the exit procedure. Meanwhile, Russia has consistently and until the very last moment advocated its preservation, ”said Sergey Ryabkov.
