White House defeat: Gibraltar releases Iranian tanker

Gibraltar released the Iranian tanker 45 days after its detention in the waters of the state. The state made this decision, despite the US request to detain the ship. Washington, in turn, is interested in this because it wants to achieve the confiscation of oil on board the vessel, which violated US sanctions. Iran called the decision of Gibraltar a victory of diplomacy and the failure of the White House policy.

Iran warned the United States that their attempt to detain Adrian Darya (formerly Grace 1), a tanker with Iranian oil, who left Gibraltar would have dire consequences.

“If they take such a step, it will be a threat to the safety of shipping in international waters. Iran also through the existing official channels, especially through the Swiss embassy in Tehran, warned the US authorities that this would have serious consequences, "said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi, answering a question about the possible detention of the tanker by the United States.
He called the request of the American authorities to Gibraltar to detain the ship illegally.

The authorities of Gibraltar on July 4 suspected the Iranian tanker Grace 1 in violation of EU sanctions against Syria. During the investigation, the police detained the captain of the tanker and several other crew members. According to a spokesman for the Government of Gibraltar on August 16, written evidence was previously given by the Iranian authorities clearly indicates that the Grace1 tanker was heading to Syria. For this reason, he called Iran’s denial of this fact a self-serving political statement.
The spokesperson noted that Iran’s written position previously sent to the Gibraltar authorities clearly states that Tehran will not send a tanker to Syria to avoid EU sanctions.
“The written position stated in notes verbal speaks for itself and confirms that the Islamic Republic of Iran has provided the mentioned obligation. The evidence, aboard Grace1 and clearly mentioned in the legal notice issued yesterday, indicates that the ship was heading to Syria. The evidence is obvious and the facts speak louder than the mercenary political statements that we hear today, ”the Gibraltarian government said.

However, Iran’s ambassador to London Hamid Baidinejad on Thursday said that Grace 1 would soon leave Gibraltar.
Iran called the liberation of the tanker a victory of diplomacy and a failure of the White House policy.
But the American side continued its policy in this regard, and on August 17, a US court issued a warrant to detain the Grace 1 tanker. According to the U.S. Justice Ministry, the District of Columbia court ruled that the oil tanker, all oil on board and $ 995 thousand should be confiscated in connection with the violation of a number of US laws.
Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo acknowledged receipt of a request for the detention of Grace 1 in connection with the US intention to seize the ship. At the same time, he stated that he had decided to free the tanker. Subsequently, the Gibraltar authorities announced twice that they could no longer detain the vessel at the request of the United States due to the difference between the sanctions regimes against Iran in the EU and the United States.
Hamid Baidinejad on Monday, July 19, confirmed that the Iranian tanker, which changed its name to Adrian Darya, left Gibraltar. He noted that this decision was made after 45 days of detention of the ship in the waters of Gibraltar.
At the same time, the Iranian side has not yet decided on the release of the British tanker Stena Impero, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
“As for the British ship detained by Tehran, it is necessary to wait for the decision of the court, which is currently studying the violations committed by the tanker,” Abbas Mousavi emphasized.
On July 19, IRNA reported that the British-flagged tanker Stena Impero was detained in the Strait of Hormuz. This happened after he turned off the receiver of the automatic recognition system and did not respond to warnings of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC, the elite part of the Iranian armed forces). Onboard were 23 sailors, three of whom were Russians. The crew refused to let go of the tanker because of "investigative measures." In addition to Russian citizens, sailors from Latvia and the Philippines remain on board.
According to the IRGC, the tanker was detained “in connection with a violation of international rules” and escorted to shore for inspection. The authorities of the United Kingdom, for their part, have accused Iran of violating international law.
The British side believes that Tehran detained this ship in the territorial waters of Oman and only then forced it to enter its waters.
Subsequently, the Iranian ambassador to the UK said that Tehran is ready for any development. According to Hamid Baidinejad, the Iranian side insists on being right. At present, the British authorities are simply obliged to restrain the forces that want to rekindle the conflict between the countries over the tanker, he stressed. “This is quite dangerous and unreasonable in difficult times for the region,” the diplomat said.
