Reliable Defense: Putin Offers Air Defense to Saudi Arabia

Vladimir Putin suggested that Saudi Arabia buy the S-300 or S-400 air defense systems. According to him, Russian air defense systems will protect Saudi refineries from drones attacks. Speaking of the Saudi oil attack, he mentioned a humanitarian disaster in Yemen and quoted the Qur'an.

Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on a drone attack on Saudi oil facilities. According to him, Riyadh should buy Russian S-300 or S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to protect its refineries.

“It is enough for the political leadership of Saudi Arabia to make a wise state decision, as the Iranian leaders did when they purchased the S-300, and did [Turkish Recep Tayyip] Erdogan, purchasing from Russia the latest S-400 Triumph air defense systems,” said Putin

Russian weapons will reliably protect any infrastructure facilities of the kingdom, the Russian president added.
A few days ago, ten drones attacked Saudi oil facilities. Hussite Yemeni rebels claimed responsibility for the attacks. However, the United States refused to believe this and accused Iran of involvement in the incident. Tehran rejected all the attacks of Washington.
Speaking about the attack on the Saudi refineries, the Russian leader noted that the incident was related to the situation in Yemen.
“There is a very serious humanitarian disaster in Yemen. We ourselves are ready to help people, and we urge everyone who can do this to follow our example, ”Putin said.
According to the Russian leader, the resolution of the crisis is possible only with the conclusion of agreements between all parties to the conflict.

“I can’t help but recall the lines from the holy Quran, where it is said:“ Remember the mercy of Allah. You once were enemies, Allah reconciled your hearts and made you brothers. ” It’s necessary to proceed from this, ”Putin concluded.
With this statement, the Russian president made the day before during a press conference following the results of a tripartite summit on Syria, which was also attended by Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani and Erdogan. Despite the fact that the attack on the Saudi Arabian refinery was not discussed, leaders spoke out about the incident.
For example, the Turkish president urged to remember who launched the military campaign in Yemen. According to him, the country cannot "stand on its own."
“What can developed countries do for Yemen, Syria? Palestine is also a disaster, but, alas, now Muslims are fighting Muslims. Recall who was the first to bomb Yemen? And we will see where it started, ”said Erdogan.

Rowhani drew attention to the issue of security in Yemen. The Iranian President recalled the daily bombing of this country.
“The people of Yemen were forced due to the flow of weapons that enters daily into Saudi Arabia and is used against them (Yemen), they were forced to respond. What the people of Yemen do, they defend themselves. And they protect against attack, ”Rouhani emphasized.
At the same time, the United States is the main supplier of weapons to Saudi Arabia. Washington does not refuse supplies, despite the situation in Yemen. US authorities explain the need for arms sales to Riyadh by the situation around Iran. Washington’s decisions are not supported in Congress, but U.S. President Donald Trump vetoed lawmakers' resolutions and endorsed Saudi arms supplies.
At the same time, a number of European countries imposed an arms embargo on Riyadh in November last year. The reason for the restrictions was the assassination of Saudi opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi, in which case representatives of the Saudi authorities appear. In particular, the embargo was imposed by Germany. American lawmakers also wanted to join in these measures, but Trump did not cancel the contracts with Riyadh.
By the way, Putin’s proposal for the S-300 or S-400 was voiced against the background of preparations for the visit of the Russian president to Riyadh. According to the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov, the trip should take place in October.
“We are announcing the exact date by agreement with the Saudi side,” Peskov added.
He also emphasized that a drone attack at a Saudi refinery does not affect the preparation of a visit to Riyadh.
