"Syria is returning to normal life": Lavrov announced the end of the war

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced the end of the war in Syria and the country's return to a state of peace. However, he acknowledged that in some regions of the state there are still pockets of tension. He called for strengthening the political process to resolve the situation in the SAR and to attract the opposition.

Syria is returning to a state of peace, despite the fact that separate hotbeds of tension remain on the territory of the republic, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with Trud.

“The war in Syria is really over. The country is gradually returning to a normal, peaceful life, ”the minister said. However, he acknowledged that there are still hotbeds of tension in territories not controlled by the Syrian government, such as Idlib and on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.

Lavrov stressed that in such a situation the tasks of boosting the political process to resolve the crisis become paramount in order to achieve long-term and reliable stabilization in Syria and the Middle East region as a whole.
Equally important is the provision of integrated humanitarian assistance to the ATS.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the fact that the formation and launch of a committee for constitutional reform will be an important step in advancing the political process that the Syrians themselves are carrying out with the assistance of the UN. The minister expressed the view that the convening of the committee will provide the government and the opposition with the opportunity for the first time to begin a direct dialogue on the future of Syria.
According to Lavrov, Moscow "attaches great importance to maintaining regular contacts with the Syrian parties, including with the opposition." In addition, the Russian side calls for the widest possible representation in the political process of all groups of Syrian society.

Lavrov noted the important role of the opposition in resolving the political conflict.

He noted that she is participating in international meetings on Syria in the Astana format and inter-Syrian contacts in Geneva. The Russian Foreign Minister is convinced that opposition representatives need to join the constitutional committee, since they can and should make a constructive contribution to the political settlement process in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2254
The Russian minister once again emphasized that Moscow favours the restoration of sovereign, territorially integral Syria, the return of all Syrian refugees to their homeland, and the country itself to the “Arab family”. Moreover, he called the speedy overcoming of the consequences of rampant terrorism particularly important. In his opinion, all this will become the key to ensuring security and stability in the Middle East.
The Syrian world has been talked about for the past six months. In June, the Syrian ambassador to Russia, Riyad Haddad, announced that the last stage of the war against terrorists was beginning in the SAR. At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that the militants were fleeing to other countries, and this could provoke a wave of terrorist attacks.
According to Haddad, the terrorists acquired not only combat skills in the Syrian war but also “tactical and strategic capabilities to use great financial and technological potential.” He suggested that this could allow them to recruit a large number of people, instruct and give orders remotely.
Back in April, Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Samer Al-Khalil claimed that the war in the country was drawing to a close, but terrorist acts and the blockade caused enormous damage to the state’s economy.
“Now the military operations in Syria are almost over, they are close to ending, after achieving the victories that were achieved by the Syrian army with broad support from our friends, led by the Russian Federation, but the war, terrorist acts and the blockade, and economic sanctions that continue, caused huge damage to the country's economy, ”he explained.
Al-Khalil called the goal of the blow inflicted on the economy of Syria the destruction of all life support in the country.
The civil war in Syria began in 2011 before it was the so-called Arab spring. The main parties to the conflict in the SAR are the Syrian government forces supporting President Bashar al-Assad, moderate opposition, Kurdish nationalists and radical Islamists, including Jebhat al-Nusra (the organization is banned in Russia) (the organization is banned in Russia) and the Islamic State "(Organization prohibited in Russia).
Today, the main large region of the country controlled by illegal armed groups is the province of Idlib. The restoration of government control over it will complete a large-scale confrontation in Syria.
The settlement of the Syrian conflict is being discussed at the sites of Nur Sultan and Geneva.
At the end of January last year, a congress of the Syrian national dialogue was held in Sochi - this was the first attempt since the start of the conflict to bring together a wide range of participants at one meeting site. The main result of the congress was the decision to create a constitutional committee, which will work in Geneva. Its main task is to prepare constitutional reform.
