Turkey intends to buy from Russia additional S-400 air defense systems

Until Turkey is able to produce S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems - it will buy weapons from Russia, the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu promised. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that the North Atlantic Alliance will not integrate S-400 air defense systems purchased by Russia from Turkey into its missile defense system.

Turkey intends to purchase S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia until the Turkish military-industrial complex can produce these weapons itself, said the country's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu at the XIV International Strategic Forum in Bled.
“[Purchase of S-400 will be carried out] until we can make our own. If we manage to buy an analogue from the USA, then we will purchase Patriot air defense systems. But if this does not succeed, then we will buy another S-400 from Russia, Turkey is an independent country, ”the Turkish Foreign Minister emphasized.
It is likely that the scenario described by the diplomat will be realized since a week earlier the United States officially withdrew its offer to Turkey to sell Patriot missile defense systems to it.
Earlier, American politicians, experts and the media pointed out that Turkey - as a member of NATO it would be natural to acquire the American Patriot air defense systems - and in fact, the governments of Turkey and the United States agreed on this.
However, the contract did not take place, firstly, because these systems were too expensive for Turkey, and secondly, because the United States did not want to transfer technology to Ankara along with the sale - for the production of weapons, said the head of the department of international and foreign policy University of Cologne Professor Dr. Thomas Jager.
The contract for the supply of four divisions of Russian air defense systems was concluded between Moscow and Ankara in December 2017.

The contract value is $ 2.5 billion, 55% of which will be covered by a Russian loan for the supply of S-400 to Turkey,
told the head of the Rostec Corporation Sergey Chemezov.
The American side took the agreement with criticism. One of the reasons is the risk of this enterprise for NATO, which was announced by the commander of the US Air Force in Europe and Africa, General Tod Walters.
He expressed confidence that if Ankara purchases this weapon used by "famous opponents" of NATO, the S-400 supplying party will have the opportunity to study the operation and technical characteristics of F-35 fighters.
Against the background of what is happening, the United States suspended the supply of Turkey equipment for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, as well as the aircraft themselves.

In Russia, Erdogan was introduced to the Su-57 fighter.
The head of Turkey noted that he sees "the prospect of wide cooperation in the field of defense products."
Commenting on Turkey’s exclusion from the F-35 fifth-generation American fighter program and the possibility of replacing them with Sukhoi Design Bureau aircraft, Erdogan noted that these aircraft are very different from each other.
“If America continues to behave in the same way, we will take care of ourselves. That is, we will evaluate - Su-35 or F-35, Su-57 or something else. When the relevant negotiations begin, we will put forward our conditions on the basis of what will be necessary for our defense sector, ”Erdogan said.
According to him, at such talks, Ankara will raise issues of joint production and lending. It is also known that approximately 100 Turkish troops at the end of May began training in the operation of the S-400 Triumph air defense system in one of the military centres in Russia.
The S-400 Triumph air defense system can hit strategic and tactical aircraft, as well as ballistic missiles, hypersonic targets and other air attack weapons. Moreover, electronic and other types of counteraction will not interfere with the work of the Russian system, FAN reports.
The range of its action on the aerodynamic target is 400 km, ballistic attack agent S-400 is able to hit at a distance of 60 km to the target at a speed of 4.8 km / s, flying to several tens of kilometres above the earth, sends the HCH.
