US Senators called on the White House to maintain military assistance to Ukraine

US senators appealed to the White House with a call not to refuse military funding for Ukraine, explaining this by the special need to allocate these funds "to ensure the long-term viability of the Ukrainian military." It is officially known that the US military is going to lay $ 250 million to finance the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but recently the media have reported the possibility of ending it.

US senators from both parties called on the White House not to refuse to provide military assistance to Ukraine. They sent a letter on Tuesday to the director of the administrative and budget department of the White House Mick Mulvaney.

The document was signed by Ohio Republican Rob Portman, New Hampshire Democrat Gene Shahin, Illinois Dick Durbin, Connecticut Democrat Richard Blumenthal, and Wisconsin Republican Ron Johnson. All of them are included in the so-called "Kokus (Association of legislators on interests -" Gazeta.Ru ") in Ukraine.

In a letter posted on Portman’s website, the senators explained that this funding is crucial for Ukraine’s long-term stability. They emphasized that the allocation of these funds has constant support and approval from the US Congress, which directs them. “We urge you to instruct the Pentagon to immediately direct these funds [to military assistance to Ukraine],” the site says.
Legislators are convinced that this assistance is “critical to ensuring the long-term viability of the Ukrainian military.”
"US financial assistance in the field of security has already helped turn the tide in this conflict, and it is necessary to protect the sovereign territory of this young country," the senators say.

CNN previously reported that over the past few weeks, Washington has expressed its intention to stop providing military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of $ 250 million. However, they clarified that a final decision on this issue has not yet been made. According to the television company, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly talked about the possibility of taking such a step.
Sources of the newspaper Politico claim that the Pentagon, as a result of a review of a package of military assistance to Ukraine, advocated its preservation. The US Department of Defense noted that since 2014, Washington has provided Kyiv with military assistance in the amount of $ 1.5 billion.

For the fiscal year 2020, which begins on October 1, the Pentagon is going to pledge $ 250 million for military assistance to Ukraine.
This was announced by the chairman of the Armed Forces Committee of the US House of Representatives, a Democrat from Washington State Adam Smith on June 10 during the presentation of the draft US military budget.
“In this section, $ 250 million is allowed to be used to fulfil the powers allowing the Minister of Defense to assist the Ukrainian government in matters related to security and intelligence,” the bill noted.
That is, compared to the current year, Washington plans to increase military assistance to Ukraine by $ 50 million. It is assumed that this amount will be spent on lethal weapons designed to increase the level of defense of Ukraine. The remaining funds, according to the plan, should be directed to the training of military personnel, logistics and support in the field of military intelligence.
There is another treaty between Washington and Kyiv: at the end of June, they signed a new memorandum of understanding on the management of stockpiles of conventional weapons. According to this agreement, the US will provide the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with $ 4 million for the construction of six ammunition depots, the US State Department explained in a statement. They specified that funding will be allocated in the next two years.
The US Foreign Office is counting on this project to provide more secure storage of Ukrainian ammunition.
In addition, this, according to American diplomats, should contribute to “Ukraine achieving its goal” - adhering to the standards of physical security and ammunition stockpile management established by NATO.
“In 2018, as the leading country of the NATO Partnership for Peace Trust Fund, the United States funded the destruction or demilitarization of more than 1.7 thousand tons of obsolete Soviet-made ammunition in Ukraine,” the statement emphasized.
In addition, the State Department recalled that from 2004 to 2018, Washington allocated Kiev more than $ 40 million for the storage and destruction of conventional weapons and ammunition, which the Ukrainian side retained after the collapse of the USSR.
