Weapon blackmail: Pentagon urged Ankara to buy US military equipment

US Deputy Secretary of Defense John Rood called on Turkey to purchase American equipment instead of Russian Su-35 and Su-57 fighters. However, he added that the choice of weapons is an internal affair of Ankara. Rood also did not specify what equipment the United States is ready to offer Turkey, given that the fate of the contract for the supply of F-35 is not yet clear.

US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs John Rood said Washington knows that Ankara is considering buying Russian Su-35 and Su-57 fighters. According to him, Turkey should buy American equipment.

“We are proud of the American systems that we have developed and which are deployed in this country. We would like to urge our Turkish partners to acquire them so that they prefer US-made machinery and equipment that is interoperable. We encourage them to move in that direction, ”said Rood.

He also added that Turkey is a sovereign country, and the choice of weapons is its internal affair.
“They make the decisions themselves. But we are ready to cooperate with them in this direction, ”said Rood.
The US Under Secretary of Defense stressed that Ankara is a long-standing ally of Washington, and there are regular contacts between the countries.
“Our defense departments have a long history of interaction, including in the field of the air force,” Rood summed up.
The deputy head of the Pentagon did not specify what kind of equipment the US is ready to sell to Turkey instead of the Russian Su-35 and Su-57. He also did not answer the question of how the purchase of fighters from Russia can affect the cooperation of the two countries.

At the same time, experts believe that the United States will apply a variety of tactics to Turkey in order to get its weapons from it. According to the director of the Center for Military-Political Studies of MGIMO, Doctor of Historical Sciences Alexei Podberezkin, Washington will “blackmail” Ankara on this issue.
“It is now so arranged in the world that some countries - following the example of India - will choose: where are weapons of higher quality, where are they cheaper, and the conditions for their acquisition are more reliable. When Erdogan chose Russia, he appealed precisely to this. First, our Su-35s are about four to five times cheaper than the F-35. Secondly, they are well-developed, highly efficient and very reliable. In addition, there is another question of diversification: if the Turks will be tied to only one seller - the United States, then the Americans will blackmail them endlessly, for example, stop servicing equipment even after deliveries. Therefore, this is a very complicated equation, ”said Podberezkin on Sputnik.
He also added that US President Donald Trump every day changes the negotiation tactics, makes a variety of “feints”.
By the way, information about the possible purchase of the Su-35 or Su-57 by the Turkish side appeared in late August, when the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Moscow and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The leaders visited the MAKS 2019 air show, at which Erdogan became interested in Russian fighters.
Erdogan, following his visit to Russia, did not rule out the possibility of acquiring the Su-35 and Su-57 instead of the American F-35s. According to him, the Turkish side is currently awaiting a final US decision.
“We haven’t come in vain. After we find out the final decision of the USA (according to F-35), we will take our own steps.  The market where we can provide ourselves with what we need is large, ”the Turkish president added.

The fact is that Washington had previously excluded Ankara from the F-35 fighter supply program in response to Turkey’s acquisition of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, September 18, will hold a meeting with Prime Minister of the State Council of China Li Keqiang.
At the same time, Turkey promised to buy planes elsewhere if the US does not supply it with an F-35. According to Turkish Foreign Ministry Mevlut Cavusoglu, Ankara is not worried because of a possible disruption in the supply of American fighters.
“The contract is legally binding, it just cannot be cancelled. If these planes are not delivered to us, then we will satisfy our needs elsewhere, ”said Cavusoglu.
He also emphasized that Turkey will retaliate against the United States if F-35 shipments are blocked.
