Bulava and Sineva: Russia will launch missiles in exercises

Strategic nuclear forces exercises will be held in Russia, during which 16 practical launches of cruise and ballistic missiles will be carried out. The task is to develop skills to repel threats to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

On October 15, Russia launched the Thunder-2019 strategic nuclear forces exercises. During them 16 practical launches of cruise and ballistic missiles will be carried out, including Bulava and Sineva, Major General Yevgeny Ilyin, acting head of the Main Directorate for International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense, said.

“For the actions of aviation, ten airfields throughout the country will be used,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
The manoeuvres will involve 12 thousand people, 213 launchers of the Strategic Missile Forces (Strategic Missile Forces), up to 105 aircraft, five of which are strategic missile carriers, five surface ships, five submarines, and 310 units of military and special equipment.

In addition, units and military units providing strategic deterrence, as well as special forces units, which will act as conventional enemy forces, will take part. The exercises will last until October 17.

They will take place at the aerodromes of long-range, military transport and operational-tactical aviation, training grounds of military districts, the Northern Fleet and at-sea training grounds in the Baltic, Barents, Caspian, Okhotsk and Black Seas.
“During the exercises, launches of cruise and ballistic missiles of various bases will be carried out, including those at the Pemboy, Chizh and Kura firing ranges,” the department emphasized.
At a briefing for foreign attaches, Ilyin specified that the exercises would be held only at Russian training grounds and that foreign contingents would not be attracted to them.
According to him, during the development of training episodes, the deployment of strategic forces will be carried out, their preparation for the use of high-precision long-range weapons, as well as comprehensive support for military operations in the areas where troops are used. “When developing comprehensive support measures, practical actions of troops are foreseen to counteract the enemy’s sabotage and reconnaissance activities, and to strengthen the protection and defense of military facilities,” Ilyin explained.
In addition, during the exercises, new methods of command and control will be developed. It is assumed that the military will need to repel a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state.
“The intent of the exercises is that in the conditions of preserving the conflict potential along the perimeter of the borders of the Russian Federation, the situation escalates, which creates a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state,” he said.
During the exercises, the command staff will continue to improve the skills of organizing command and control of troops and deterring a likely enemy during the implementation of measures. “Based on the results of the exercise, all the troops and forces involved in the event will be evaluated for their willingness to solve tasks for their intended purpose,” the military added.
Meanwhile, large-scale exercises to combat the "enemy" landing have already started at three training grounds in Primorye and on Sakhalin. Up to 8 thousand military personnel of the Eastern Military District, more than 3 thousand weapons and military equipment and up to 50 aeroplanes and helicopters take part in them, the district press service reports.
Since October 14, units of the Primorsky Association and the army corps of the district, located on Sakhalin and the islands of the Kuril ridge, have entered into a training confrontation.
The main phase of the exercises will be held at the Sakhalin Uspenovskiy training ground. To play a training battle, some of the units of the Primorsky Association will be transferred from permanent deployment points to the Sakhalin Region.
During the anti-landing defense, motorized infantry and tank units will provide fire support to the troops. Their air cover will be provided by Su-30SM fighters, Su-25SM attack aircraft, Su-24M2 bombers and Mi-8AMTSH Terminator transport and assault helicopters. Aerial reconnaissance will be carried out by crews of Su-24MR aircraft. For the adjustment of fire will be responsible for the calculations of drones.
