On October 2, the Russian press reported that elements of the Russian S-500 Prometheus air defense system were tested in Syria. It was reported that during the "testing, certain problems were identified in the operation of the equipment, but they were able to be quickly eliminated." The tests are already completed and recognized successful, the media wrote with reference to unnamed sources in the Ministry of Defense and the military-industrial complex.
Already this phrase alone shows that there were no "tests".
Tests of promising weapons and military equipment are a factory, joint and state. Based on their results, a corresponding document is compiled, followed by a whole staircase of signatures by the military and industry representatives, a report is prepared to the leadership, and only then is an order issued by the Minister of Defense on the adoption of the appropriate model for service. This is the very scheme of work. And if we are talking about "testing", then it is immediately obvious that the authors of such expressions have never been involved in the complex work of testing and adopting equipment.
Moreover, the Russian Ministry of Defense has already stated that there was simply no need for such tests.
“The S-500 is designed to deal with ballistic and aerodynamic targets at long ranges. There was no need for testing, and even more so in using the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, ”the Russian military department said, Izvestia writes.
To begin with, if the prospective Russian anti-aircraft missile system S-500 “Prometheus” were actually transported to Syria, then only this fact would be immediately revealed by means of detailed photo intelligence from the United States.

Moreover, if during the tests would have been carried out live firing. By means of Western tracking, missile launches would be immediately detected, and a noticeable information wave would rise on this occasion. In the meantime, even the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system, a long time ago deployed in Syria, has not yet completed a single live fire. This was simply not necessary.

Is the S-500 needed in Syria

The declared distant border of the S-500 air defense zone is 600 km. The security zone when performing live firing at the maximum range of Prometheus should, in this case, be at least 1,500 km. That is, during the tests, it is necessary to warn Ankara, Athens, Cairo, Tehran that on the territory of these countries the fall of rocket fragments and targets is possible.
Today, even Russia does not have an appropriate training ground in order to fully comply with such safety requirements. The only training ground that met such conditions was deployed in Saryshagan in Soviet times. However, today it is the territory of Kazakhstan.
In addition, somewhere it is necessary to deploy launch points for ballistic and aerodynamic target missiles. Again, in order to check the firing efficiency at the maximum range, they must be created at a distance of several thousand kilometres from the starting positions of the S-500 “Prometheus” air defense system. For example, in Soviet times, missile defense systems were deployed at the Saryshagan range, and ballistic targets were launched from the Kapustin Yar range - and this distance is more than two thousand kilometres. To do this in the Mediterranean region, ballistic target missiles must be launched from around the Rome region.
And how it is possible to fulfil such boundary conditions on the territory of Syria in principle, where a significant part of the territory is not yet controlled by the legitimate authorities, is unknown.
A landfill is not a desert where test launches are made in all possible directions. First of all, the landfill is a measuring complex. And on its territory, as a rule, a whole system (network) of measuring points is deployed. If they are absent, then any launches and tests are generally devoid of any meaning.
Finally, during any tests of air defense systems, it is necessary to create the necessary air and jamming situation and designed for the distant future, that is, for weapons that the enemy will only have in the foreseeable future. That is, it is necessary to attract for these purposes the most modern of the available domestic weapons and military equipment. How to do this in Syria, especially from all possible directions of an air enemy’s strike, is unclear. That is, there are no convincing reasons to bring even one “radar” to this Arab country.
And, besides, it’s very good to test any, even more, promising weapons system in a combat situation. However, in Syria, there are no air and interference conditions that would fully comply with the declared tactical and technical characteristics of the S-500 "Prometheus".
Terrorist formations in Idlib do not have the means to launch spacecraft, which must be destroyed in near space at an altitude of 200-250 km. The rebels do not have tactical, operational-tactical ballistic missiles and hypersonic devices. Terrorists do not have manned aircraft, especially devices with low radar visibility.
That is, there are no conditions under which in Syria it would be possible to check the performance characteristics of S-500 air defense systems in real combat.
And for the fight against UAVs that terrorists have at their disposal, it is quite enough to have Pantsir air defense systems, Tor air defense systems and electronic warfare systems at the bases of Khmeimim and Tartus.
