It was carried out from the Plesetsk cosmodrome at the Kura test site. In addition, cruise missiles were launched from the Iskander operational-tactical missile system.
In addition, during the exercises, strategic Tu-95MS bombers launched cruise missiles at the Pemboy training grounds in Komi and Kura.
“A training was conducted with the forces and means of the ground, sea and aviation component of the strategic deterrence forces. The tasks envisaged during the training of the strategic deterrence forces have been fully implemented, ”the Defense Ministry emphasized. The Russian military drew attention to the fact that all missiles reached their goals, confirming the specified characteristics.
The department explained that the practical launching of missiles was controlled from the National Defense Management Center of the Russian Federation.
Thunder-2019 aircraft control exercises are held in Russia from October 15 to 17. They involved 12 thousand militaries, 213 launchers of strategic missile forces ( Strategic Rocket Forces ), missile carriers and ships. Manoeuvres also take part in formations and military units providing strategic deterrence. At the same time, other participants - special forces - act as forces of the conditional enemy.
The fact that during the exercises 16 practical launches of cruise and ballistic missiles will be carried out was announced on October 14 by the acting head of the Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense, Major General Yevgeny Ilyin.
He noted that manoeuvres will include the launch of Bulava and Sineva ballistic missiles.
“Ten aerodromes throughout the country will be used for aviation operations,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
At a briefing for foreign attaches, he drew attention to the fact that the exercises will take place only at Russian training grounds, and foreign contingents are not involved in them.
Major General said that during the manoeuvres, military personnel, according to the plan, should deploy strategic forces groups, prepare them for the use of high-precision long-range weapons, and comprehensively provide military operations in the areas where troops are used.
“When developing comprehensive support measures, practical actions are envisaged by the troops to counter the sabotage and reconnaissance of the enemy, to strengthen the protection and defense of military facilities,” Ilyin said.
He called the goal of the manoeuvres a test of the preparedness of the military command and control bodies and improvement of the working skills of the leading and operational personnel.
“The idea of the exercise is that, while maintaining the potential for conflict along the perimeter of the borders ... an escalation of the situation takes place, which creates a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state,” said the representative of the Ministry of Defense.
According to military expert Yuri Knutov, exercises are necessary for the coordinated work of the updated structure of the Russian armed forces. “Given the new structure that we have developed in the armed forces, which now has four districts and five commands, the fleet, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the General Staff want to test preparations for joint cooperation between the commands of different districts and work out serious strategic tasks,” he said RT.
