  • The Honor brand introduced several mid-budget models with different positioning at the end of the fall, including the Honor 20S. The manufacturer calls it "a smartphone designed specifically for mobile photography enthusiasts." Honor 20S received a triple main camera of 48 megapixels and a front camera with a resolution of 24 megapixels with special night mode. Whether this turns a mobile novelty, as promised, into "a real tool for creative expression", we learn from a detailed review.

    Appearance and usability

    The Honor 20S case is made in a catchy youth design with bright iridescent gradient colours of a shiny case. It sparkles like a Christmas tree toy, not only with its back wall but also with sidewalls, which are exactly the same in colour and texture. We could not determine the nature of the materials with confidence, but the manufacturer claims that the sides are made of metal, and the back panel is glass.

    Both the back wall and the side frame are slippery, and their varnished surfaces are quickly covered with fingerprints. But the overall dimensions of the device are encouraging: the device turned out, one might say, miniature by modern standards. At least he is unusually thin and light. Such a small smartphone fits comfortably in your hand and fits comfortably in your pockets. The only pity is that it is too slippery.

    But physics, as they say, cannot be fooled, and in order to accommodate more or less decent optics in this thin case, it was necessary to install it so that it sticks out. The module with cameras that extends beyond the rear panel, of course, prevents the device from lying steadily on a solid surface, and the smartphone sways when it touches the screen.

    The fingerprint scanner is located behind, its round platform is slightly recessed, so it is easy to touch. There are no complaints about the work of the scanner itself; it works quickly and accurately.

    The front camera is located here in a very small drop-shaped cutout, which takes away very little space from the screen. But, of course, neither an additional module nor a flash fit into such a small cutout.

    The smartphone supports two SIM cards, but the slot for cards in the smartphone is hybrid, it does not support the simultaneous installation of a second Nano-SIM and a microSD memory card, one will have to be sacrificed.

    The Honor 20S is equipped with a FullView IPS-display 66 × 141 mm in size, 6.15 inches diagonal, 2312 × 1080 resolution (with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9), dot density - 415 ppi. The frame around the screen has a width of 3 mm on the sides, 7 mm at the bottom, and 4 mm at the top.

    The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are better than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, we present a photo on which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Honor 20S, then they can be distinguished by size):

    The screen of the Honor 20S is noticeably darker (brightness in photos is 116 compared to 119 for Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the Honor 20S screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS - One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass/air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better under conditions of intense external illumination, but repairing them in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating, which is better in efficiency than Nexus 7, so fingerprints are removed much more easily, but appear at a lower speed.

    When displaying a white field in full screen and with manual brightness control, its maximum value was 430 cd / m² under normal conditions, and in very bright light it rises to 480 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, therefore, given the excellent anti-glare properties, screen readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an acceptable level. The minimum brightness value is 1 cd / m². In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control according to the light sensor (it is located to the right of the front speaker cutout on the upper edge of the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions. If you do not intervene, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 4 cd / m² (dark), in an office lit by artificial light (approximately 550 lux) it sets to 200 cd / m² (normal), in a very bright environment (corresponds to clear lighting in the afternoon outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) increases to 480 cd / m² (which is necessary). The brightness level of the backlight depends on the position of the slider in the dark and in average conditions, and in a very bright environment, the maximum is always set. The default result did not satisfy us, so we moved the slider slightly to the right in complete darkness and for the three conditions mentioned above, we got 20, 185 and 480 cd / m² (ideal combination). It turns out that the auto-brightness function works adequately and allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant modulation of the backlight, so there is no screen flicker.

    The screen has good viewing angles without significant colour shift even with large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting colours. For comparison, we present photographs on which the same images are displayed on the Honor 20S and Nexus 7 screens, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the colour balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

    The colours on the Honor 20S screen are clearly oversaturated, and the colour balance of the screens varies greatly. Recall that a photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of colour reproduction and is provided only for conditional visual illustration. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera matrix does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision.

    Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

    It can be seen that the colours did not change much on both screens, but the Honor 20S contrast decreased to a greater extent due to greater blackening.

    The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but the Honor 20S still has a slightly lighter screen. The black field with a diagonal deviation is highlighted strongly and acquires a reddish hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):

    Contrast (approximately in the centre of the screen) is high - about 1200: 1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 20 ms (10 ms on + 10 ms off). The transition between grey tones of 25% and 75% (by the numerical value of the colour) and vice versa in total takes 32 ms. Constructed at 32 points with an equal interval in the numerical value of the shade of grey, the gamma curve did not reveal a blockage in either highlights or shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.03, which is below the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve noticeably deviates from the power law:

    This is due to the fact that in this unit there is a dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness with an unobvious dependence on time and on the nature of the displayed image. As a result, the obtained dependence of the brightness on the hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with successive output of shades of grey to almost the entire screen. For this reason, a series of tests — determining contrast and response time, comparing black flare at angles — we performed (however, as always) when displaying special patterns with unchanged average brightness, rather than plain colours in the entire screen. In general, such a non-switched brightness correction does nothing but harm, since a constant change in screen brightness can at least cause some discomfort.

    The spectra of the components are fairly well separated, which leads to a wide colour gamut. For a consumer device, the wide colour gamut is a drawback, because as a result, the colours of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and such the vast majority) have unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, such as skin tones. The result is shown in the photos above.
    However, not everything is so bad: when you select the Normal profile, the compression is compressed to the sRGB borders.

    The balance of shades on the grayscale after selecting the Normal profile is acceptable, since on most of the grayscale the colour temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of the black body (ΔE) is below 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for the consumer device. There is no special need for additional correction. (The darkest areas of the greyscale can be ignored, since there the colour balance does not matter much, and the error in measuring colour characteristics at low brightness is large.)

    Marketers have tried to intimidate the user to show the degree of concern of the manufacturer. Of course, there is no UV radiation (see spectrum above), and there is no eye fatigue caused by blue light. In principle, bright light can lead to disruption of the circadian rhythm, and in general, everyone agrees that the brighter the light and the more light in the blue region, the stronger the suppression of melatonin production, but the critical levels of illumination in different sources are given a difference of several orders of magnitude. In any case, everything is decided by adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, and there is absolutely no point in distorting the colour balance, reducing the contribution of blue.

    To summarize: the screen has a high maximum brightness (480 cd / m²) and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used without any problems outdoors, even on a summer sunny day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level (up to 1 cd / m²). It is acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. Also, the advantages of the screen include effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, high contrast (1200: 1), excellent black field uniformity, sRGB colour gamut and good colour balance (when choosing the right profile). The disadvantages are the low stability of black to the deviation of gaze from the perpendicular to the screen plane.     Cameras

    The main camera of the Honor 20S is formally triple. The main module with a 48 megapixel sensor and a lens with an f / 1.8 (1/2 ″, 0.8 nm) aperture is supplemented by a wide-angle module (120 °) with an 8 megapixel sensor and a lens with an f / 2.4 aperture, and a module for measuring the depth of field of a scene (2 megapixels, f / 2.4), which by itself does not produce photographs, but allows you to shoot portraits on the main module (read - blur their background).

    The camera in automatic modes is controlled by AI, which sets the optimal shooting parameters, according to automation. An intelligent algorithm recognizes the plot in the frame and offers the most suitable shooting and image processing options. At the moment, the front camera recognizes 8 categories of scenarios, and the main one - 22 categories. AI is automatically adjusting colour, brightness and contrast, but you can turn it off.

    When shooting, phase-assisted (PDAF) autofocus is used. There is no native ability to save pictures in RAW.

    The main module offers to shoot by default in the "four pixels in one" format, that is, in a resolution of 12 megapixels, and not in full 48 megapixels. If you shoot in full resolution, the image size is tripled, and the camera interface in this mode does not offer zooming and other settings. However, the quality at the same time still turns out a little better: it is possible to avoid blurring noise and underlining the contours - namely, 12-megapixel images are subjected to such processing.

    The second camera is a wide-angle module. There is nothing unexpected: it removes much worse than the main module, but its very presence makes it possible to photograph large objects from a short distance, fitting everything into the frame. If quality does not play a decisive role, or if you are going to view pictures only on a smartphone screen (without magnification), this option has a right to life. This camera does not have autofocus. Here, large areas of blur are noticeable at the edges of the image, and in the central part of the frame, the detail is too low. In poor lighting and handheld shooting, the wide-angle module is clearly passive.

    Video can be shot at a maximum resolution of 1080p at 60 fps. There is no 4K video, optical stabilization, too. Video shooting quality is average - both in detail and in sharpness. At night, the camera shoots video weakly. The soundtrack is recorded quite cleanly, but with a strong noise of the wind, dips unexpectedly appear. Obviously, this is the result of the noise reduction system.

    The Honor 20S selfie camera uses a 24MP sensor and an f / 2.0 aperture. In general, the emphasis in the smartphone is placed on a selfie camera, including when shooting in the dark. There is a special night shooting mode for selfies, which glues several pictures into one.



    Thanks to a complex of software and hardware technologies and a processor with support for artificial intelligence, the camera tries to recognize objects and facial features in the frame, using the optimal algorithm for processing each pixel in the image.

    Telephone part and communications

    SoC Kirin 710 theoretically has a modem with support for LTE Cat.12 / 13 with a speed of up to 600 Mbps for downloading, but for some reason, the speed of 400 Mbps is indicated on the official Russian website. Honor 20S supports several frequencies ranges LTE FDD and TD, among them - all the most common in Russia. In practice, within the city limits of the Moscow region, the device demonstrates confident operation in wireless networks, does not lose connection, quickly restores communication after an emergency brake. The Wi-Fi module supports both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and 802.11ac mode. There is Bluetooth version 4.2, and there is also an NFC module.

    The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, while dialling a phone number, a search is made by the first letters in the contacts. The methods for sorting and displaying contacts are standard for the Android interface. Vibrating alert is very noticeable, there are no complaints about it. Cards work in Dual SIM Dual Standby mode.

    A new feature has appeared: video ringtones. It allows you to select an individual video for each contact in the phone book and set it instead of a ringtone.

    Software and multimedia

    As a software platform, the Honor 20S uses Google Android 9th version with a proprietary shell. More precisely, with one of the branded shells, because the use of either EMUI or Magic UI in smartphones of a brand does not add up to it. Here is just Magic UI 2.1.0 - however, it has no obvious differences from the latest versions of EMUI.

    In any case, the interface is clear, convenient, flexibly customizable, supports gestures, one-handed operation, voice control. You can use special modes like gaming, productive, economical, or even special “in the case”. You can clone your accounts on social networks to write comments to yourself and peep at others, as well as much more than most users do not even need.

    The main speaker in the device is one, and it sounds surprisingly bright, clear, voluminous and clean - not at all flat, like, say, Honor 9X. However, the maximum volume level here, frankly, is low. In the headphones, the sound is also very good. For listening to the headphones, the Histen audio effects system is provided, there are presets for different types of headphones. There is also an FM radio and voice recorder with quite satisfactory sensitivity.

    Considering that Honor, unlike many other Chinese manufacturers, always pre-installs its own audio player with settings, and is not limited to the Play Music simplified to a minimum, we can say that for its level the Honor 20S with sound is all right.

    Performance

    Honor 20S is built on a single-chip system Kirin 710, this SoC is made according to the 12 nm process technology. The Kirin 710 configuration includes two CPU clusters: four Cortex-A73 cores with a frequency of 2.2 GHz and four Cortex-A53 with a frequency of 1.7 GHz. For graphics performance meets the GPU Mali-G51.

    The amount of RAM is 6 GB, the storage capacity is 128 GB (of which about 108 GB is free). It supports the installation of a microSD memory card, as well as the connection of external devices to the USB Type-C port in USB OTG mode.

    Kirin 710 - this is not the latest and most productive SoC. Kirin 810 has long been prepared to replace it, but the Chinese are holding it for the domestic market (in many ways - not of their own free will). Some competitors in smartphones for the same or even less money can find the Snapdragon 675, which in the same AnTuTu gives out more than 200K points, while the Kirin 710 barely exceeds 170K. However, the Kirin family’s SoCs generally tend to show not very good results in benchmarks with good, however, responsiveness in real use, plus the graphics optimization technology in GPU Turbo 3.0 video games is here designed to improve picture quality in 3D.

    With games, the situation is predictable: Modern Combat 3, Mortal Kombat X are going well, while Injustice 2 and PUBG are already slowing down. You can play, but definitely not at high graphics settings.

    Heats more in the upper part of the device, which, apparently, corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heating chamber, the maximum heating was 44 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), which is higher than the average value in this test for modern smartphones.

    Note: If the Uniformity and Skips columns are set to green, then this means that most likely when watching movies artefacts caused by uneven rotation and skipping frames, you either don’t see them at all, or their number and visibility will not affect comfort viewing. Red marks indicate possible problems associated with the playback of the corresponding files.

    According to the criterion for outputting frames, the playback quality of video files on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since in most cases frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required to) be displayed with a uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p), the image of the actual video file is displayed one-on-one in pixels, exactly the height of the screen (in landscape orientation) and in true Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range 16–235: all shades of gradation are displayed in the shadows and in the lights. Note that this smartphone does not support hardware decoding of H.265 files with a colour depth of 10 bits per colour.

    Battery life

    Honor 20S has a small to date built-in battery capacity of 3340 mAh. Accordingly, the device demonstrates autonomy indicators below average, since smartphones with a screen with a diagonal of "6 with a small inch" now, as a rule, put batteries with a capacity of at least 4000 mAh. In real life, the smartphone reaches the evening charge, nothing more, but, of course, it all depends on the usage scenario.

    Testing was traditionally carried out at the usual level of energy consumption without using the energy-saving functions, although there are those in the device.

    Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) with a minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted until the battery was completely discharged for about 14 hours, and when continuously watching high-quality video (720p) with the same the brightness level through the home Wi-Fi network, the device operates up to 10.5 hours. In the 3D-games mode, the smartphone can work no more than 5 hours.
    The smartphone is fully charged in 2 hours with a current of 1.5 A at a voltage of 9 V. Wireless charging is not supported.
