But for the price, they are not competitors

Our laboratory has already introduced you to the Core i9-10980XE processor, which is Intel's new flagship HEDT lineup. Now it is possible to evaluate what the latest AMD Threadripper CPUs are capable of.

Recall that so far there are only two of them: Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X, but yesterday we wrote that the 64-core Threadripper 3990X will be released next year.

So, the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and 3970X are already on sale, and themed resources have published their reviews. As always, we will make a selection from the results of various resources in order to understand what new products are capable of.

Something is hardly worth commenting here. The new AMD CPUs simply demonstrate an incredible level of performance, often bypassing the previous generation of Threadripper (the advantage of the 24-core 3960X over the 32-core 2990WX is especially impressive) and the top-end Core i9-10980XE. It is also curious to look at the results of the Xeon W-3175X, which, despite its frequencies, price and positioning, is also not able to compete with the new Ryzen Threadripper.

Of course, there are applications where the news is far from the fastest. Often this is the software that is not able to work normally with a large number of cores.

As for energy consumption, it is large, but it almost exactly coincides with the declared one.

Unfortunately, when it comes to prices, it’s not so simple. The bottom line is that Intel, not being able to compete with such CPUs, has lowered the prices of its HEDT processors. And now the top-end Core i9-10980XE is much cheaper than the “basic” Ryzen Threadripper 3960X, so AMD's new products are out of competition not only in terms of performance but also in price. However, it is possible that AMD achieved this, as those who need maximum performance will have to look exclusively at the new Threadripper.
