Regarding the feed trays in the official materials, not everything is immediately clear. So, on the Russian-language page of the company’s website, “Paper stock: standard. - 500 sheets ”without specifying what kind of paper is meant and how much each of the two standard trays holds. In the table we presented the data for both of these trays from the user manual, but there is a note: this is for “Plain paper 1”, and this setting implies a range from 66 to 74 g / m², that is, the density is lower than that of the most common in Russia office paper 80 g / m², which should fit a little smaller.

For print speed, there is no indication of the mode - one-sided or two-sided

 Ricoh P 502 A4

Together with the printer are delivered:
  • software and documentation CD
  • several printed instructions
  • power cable.
In addition, a starting toner cartridge for 17,400 thousand prints has already been installed (that is, its operating time is the same as that of the standard one, supplied separately - and this is nice), as well as a drum unit.

Consumables are:

 Ricoh P 502 A4

  • standard toner cartridge for 17,400 prints (A4, ISO / IEC 19752),
  • drum unit for 70,000 prints.
 Ricoh P 502 A4

Also mentioned is the replacement of the fusing unit (fuser), moreover, as part of the maintenance kit, which also includes the transfer roller and dust filter. Approximate operating time of such a kit is not indicated, but you can focus on the predecessor models: for the SP 4500 series, the replacement interval was 120 thousand prints.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

In the manual, toner cartridges are not very correctly called print cartridges. There is no separate capacity for waste toner - according to the instructions, it is in the print cartridge and is replaced with it.

As far as you can understand from the available official materials, the difference between the P 501 and P 502 models is only in the consumable resource: the Ricoh P 501 is equipped with a starting toner cartridge for 6 thousand prints, a drum for 40 thousand, and two types of cartridges are purchased separately - for 3000 (standard) and 14,000 (high capacity) prints. However, the initial cost of the purchase is much less: at the time of publication of the review, the average retail prices for this model were 26 thousand rubles against 47 thousand for the older model.

We could not find information about the interchangeability of cartridges and drums, but from the experience of “communication” with other similar lines of printers and MFPs, we can assume that at least a toner cartridge for 17,400 prints cannot be used in the P 501.

The list of options includes additional feeding trays of two types: with a capacity of 250 and 500 sheets, there can be up to three. Thus, the total stock of paper for two regular and three additional trays will be 2100 sheets.

Since the height of the printer with several optional trays is considerable, you can purchase a special roller platform, which at the same time will facilitate the movement of the device.

There is a whole set of additional internal modules, we list only a few:

  • Wireless adapter Wi-Fi 802.11n / g / b / a,
  • Optional Ethernet adapter
  • Hard drive (allows you to store documents for printing),
  • Bidirectional IEEE 1284 / ECP interface (parallel port),
  • PostScript 3 module
Note that in the support section of the official website, two manuals are available for download: one abbreviated in PDF format, the second with extended information in the form of HTML-help.

Appearance, design features, preparation for work:

The device is quite compact, although weighty - with a set of consumables it pulls almost 20 kilograms.

The shape of the printer resembles a low bar, the width of which along the front is slightly less than the depth. The upper part is dark grey, the remaining surfaces are milky white.

At the front panel, the upper half protrudes slightly, at this point there is a folding bypass tray with an exhaust extender, which ensures the normal placement of A4 paper. To his left is a round Power button.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

The lower (in height) third is occupied by a pull-out paper tray equipped with a convenient protruding handle, a manually set paper size indicator and a mechanical indicator of its remainder.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

Everything above this tray is a lid that pivots forward, behind it are the places for installing the toner cartridge and the drum unit. This cover is held by a latch, its button is displayed on the right wall.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

 Ricoh P 502 A4

On the side, walls stand out small removable covers with slots for ventilation, behind which there are filters. In the lower part of both sidewalls, there are recesses for capture by hands when carrying; the instruction recommends carrying the printer together, but its weight allows one person to do this.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

On the right wall, you can see another cover, you need to remove it to install the optional hard drive.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

A significant part of the top plane of the printer is occupied by the niche of the output tray. To the right of it is a control panel with an LCD screen, to the left, closer to the front plane, the position of the NFC mark is marked.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

There is also a hinged lid behind it, behind it there is a paper path and a fusing unit.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

The interface connectors (USB type B for connecting to a computer, network Ethernet and two USB type A, designed for external devices - for example, card identification devices) are located on the rear right side, below are slots for installing optional modules, including a Wi-Fi adapter. The power cable socket is also on the back, but on the other hand, near the left wall.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

All connectors are buried very little, so the cables connected to them will noticeably protrude beyond the dimensions of the printer. And this fact and the need to sometimes open the back wall must be considered when choosing a place to place.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

Preparation for work is very simple, the actions are displayed on the attached leaflet.

After the first power-up, you can select the menu language (Russian is also available), at this time the initial pumping of toner takes less than a minute.

Then it is proposed to set the basic settings: date and time, as well as interface parameters. In the standard supply, there are two of them - a wired network (by default, DHCP is used to get the parameters) and USB (if you plan to use a local connection, you must first activate the USB port, which is turned off by default).

After turning on the printer for the first time, the smell is felt - not harsh and not annoying, but noticeable, nothing like the other new Ricoh models that visited our laboratory. However, after a couple of days of operation, it greatly weakens, and then completely disappears.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

Control Panel, Menu:

The control panel consists of an LCD mounted on a hinge (for the diagonal of the image area, our measurement showed 6.1 cm) and a pad with buttons and LED indicators.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

The hinge allows the screen to rotate a full 90 degrees, from horizontal to vertical; turning force is quite comfortable. Thus, you can easily choose the optimal slope for any placement of the printer and the operator relative to it (sitting or standing, with any height).

 Ricoh P 502 A4

To reduce the chance of accidental damage, a special recess is provided in the top cover of the printer for laying the panel with the screen in a horizontal position - it does not protrude from the plane of the cover.

To navigate the menu, a five-button block with left-right, up-down arrows and a central OK button is used (in our opinion, this is more familiar and convenient than four arrow buttons and separately made OK, as in some other new Ricoh models). Five more buttons control the modes and settings, including calling up the menu, pause, resume and cancel the current task.

The indicators are typical for such printers: power (blue, off in power saving mode), errors (red/yellow) and data input (blue).

The available display to modern users, spoiled by the excellent LCD screens of various gadgets, will seem primitive: monochrome, with low resolution. However, he performs his tasks quite normally - the inscriptions are read without difficulty, the viewing angles are sufficient for most cases.

The menu is quite simple to learn - not only an experienced admin but even a more or less advanced user is quite able to understand the control logic and get to the desired setting without a long study of instructions. The structure and logic of both the information displayed on the screen and the settings menu are the same for many new Ricoh printers, which reduces the time for users and administrators to master several different models.

The home page or the standby page displays the status of the main supplies in the form of icons. The icons are small but quite visual, they graphically show the remainder of the toner, as well as the paper in each tray (probably, if there are optional trays, the icons will be larger in terms of the number of trays, so their size is not very large).

  • Status messages — for example, “Ready” or “Print ...”, as well as error messages are displayed on the top line of the screen.
  • During printing, the middle of the screen displays the name of the file to be printed, the selected tray, the paper size and type (if it is different from “normal”) in it. In energy-saving mode, the corresponding inscription appears on the display, with the covers open too.
  • Among other things, the menu has a consumables status page (but there is a little more information than on the readiness page) and a counter (it has only one value: total number of prints).
  • There is a large set of different settings, both conventional for this kind of printer, and specific.
  • Various timers, parameters of the control panel itself, and behaviour after errors are configured.
  • There are items related to the display of some useful information, with the network and print settings.

In the system settings, there are not very clear points like “On / Off, Closed (energy)” with ON and OFF values. The HTML help explains: this is the shutdown control of the fusing unit (fuser, “stove”). To increase energy savings, you can turn off the fuser while the printer is idle, but this will require additional time to return to standby. By default, this mode is disabled.

You can configure the device to restrict its use by unauthorized users, and then before starting work, you will need to authenticate either by the user code or by entering the login and password. True, the lack of an alphanumeric block of buttons on the control panel makes this procedure, not the most convenient.

In the process of working with the menu, we did not have any significant comments on its Russification. Of the little things, let’s only mention a setting such as “silent mode” - it is usually called quiet, which better conveys the purpose: reducing noise by reducing print speed (this is the name we saw earlier with other Ricoh printing equipment). There are other examples of not very correct translations or not very successful abbreviations, but they do not particularly interfere with correct perception.

USB local connection, print driver settings:

We traditionally consider driver settings as an example of a USB connection, even if the performance of the device makes this use case unlikely.

In the case of the Ricoh P 502, developers are clearly hinting that it is better to use the printer as a network printer, recall: the USB interface is disabled by default. Nevertheless, we will start with a local connection, having previously used this port in the menu settings.

Windows 10 (32-bit) was installed on the test computer. As is usually done with USB connections, the computer is not connected to the printer with a cable before installing the software, but on request.

The installation program was launched from the disk from the kit. First, select the installation from the disk (there is another option for installing online), then specify the connection method.

At the next stage, we confirm that a new printer is being installed (but you can update an already installed one), and select the one you need:

 Ricoh P 502 A4

Recall that the Ricoh equipment can come with different brands, including those listed in the screenshot.

You should be reminded that the USB cable should not connect the printer and the computer, and this must be confirmed in order to continue the installation. After the copying of files is completed, a request to connect the printer appears:

 Ricoh P 502 A4

The installation ends with the question of whether to make the Ricoh P 502 the default printer, after which we get the PCL 6 driver ready for use.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

The settings interface in the driver differs from what we saw for PCL 6 in other Ricoh printing devices, but the difference is purely “cosmetic” - the settings are the same, but they are arranged a little differently. But, of course, all such drivers are quite similar.

The first tab of the driver window contains the most commonly used settings.

When choosing the type of paper, the descriptions are not only verbal but also indicating density ranges in grams per square meter, that is, when changing media, you will not need to constantly use the instructions for clarification, as was the case with printers of some other manufacturers.

You can set the printing of booklets, as well as a place from 2 to 16 pages of a document on one sheet with a corresponding reduction.

On the second tab, the set of settings and settings is much wider. So, you can set the output scaling from 25 to 400 per cent, insert covers and separation sheets, print posters, breaking the page into 2, 4 or 9 sheets with an increase for subsequent glueing:

In addition to the standard ones, you can define a custom paper size:

True, the specification specifies a noticeably narrower range in width and especially in length (we took the size information for the table at the beginning of the review from the list of technical specifications in the instructions).

Many installations are dedicated to print quality. In addition to resolution (600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 dpi), these include priority (speed - normal - quality), as well as additional settings, the window with which is not very correctly called “Color Balance”, although it refers to brightness and contrasts that can be set both for the document as a whole and for individual components: text, graphics, and photo images (unless, of course, the document is mixed).

You can turn on the toner saving mode, but we did not find the inclusion of the “silent” (or quiet) mode using the driver tools.

The third tab is not about printing, but the first two tabs - for example, you can determine which one will open when you call up the settings, which is very convenient, for example, if necessary, often change some specific settings.

Ethernet network connection:

With a wired connection, the default settings are determined using DHCP, but you can also set them manually. And you definitely need to check the settings: for Ethernet, auto-detection of speed is assigned by default, but excluding gigabit per second, and if this mode is used on the network, then it must be enabled in the printer settings.

We begin the driver installation again - from the disk. We select the network connection method, then we are asked if the printer is really ready to work on the network:

 Ricoh P 502 A4
  • After that, there is a search for printers on the network, select the one you need:
  • At the driver installation stage, you can specify a name and set the printer as the default.
  • Upon request, we restart the computer and get the installed PCL 6 driver, its interface and capabilities are exactly the same as described above.
Ricoh P 502 A4

Web image monitor:

By typing the printer's IP address in the address bar of the browser, we get the Web Image Monitor web interface window familiar to us from previous Ricoh models, for which you can also select Russian. Of course, there are differences, but they are not of a fundamental nature.

As you can see in the screenshots, you can see the status of the device, including the readings of the counters (this time not just one thing in common, but with the details).

The “Device Management” tab now has a single “Configuration” page with the basic settings of the printer, and they are available only for viewing, and to change them, you need to log in by clicking on the “Login” button in the upper right corner.

At the initial stage, there is only one user - administrator ( admin login ), his password is empty by default, just click "OK". But, of course, if necessary, you can set your own password.

After that, the list of pages available from the mentioned bookmarks and the composition of the “Configuration” page will expand, it will be possible to change the settings and settings.

There are a lot of different points and meanings in them, not all of them can be unambiguously clear right away, therefore there is also a help that can be studied online or downloaded to your computer and called from it.

Work with mobile devices:

To use the printer together with mobile devices, the option of a Wi-Fi adapter is not necessary at all, a wired connection is enough. The main thing is that both devices should be on the same network, albeit in different segments. It was in such circumstances that we tried printing from an Android smartphone.

One option is to use the Ricoh Smart Device Connector application, which is available on the Play Market (version 3.9.3 was offered during testing).

 Ricoh P 502 A4

As usual, after installing the application, you should “register” a printer in it, for which several methods are provided, but not all of them can be implemented with a specific printing device.

This time we tried to use NFC, after placing the test smartphone above the label, the printer was successfully detected.

When using a mobile gadget that does not support NFC, there is another option - with a QR code that is printed on a piece of paper from the printer menu (“Host Interface → Smart Device Connector → Print QR Code”).

The main thing - after finding the printer, do not forget to put a "dot" in the line with its name and click "Add device".

 Ricoh P 502 A4

After that, you can proceed to print documents or images: select the necessary and set the print options.

Advanced printer management is available using the familiar Web Image Monitor interface, which is called up in the browser window of a mobile device.

You can use the Google Cloud Print service, and for owners of Apple gadgets - AirPrint technology.

Testing:

When you turn on the ready page on the display appears after 12-13 seconds, almost immediately after that, the Power indicator stops flashing and lights up constantly, the mechanisms stop working. That is, our measurement fully confirms the declared warm-up time.

After pressing the Power button to turn off the printer, a message appears stating that the standby time can be up to 2 minutes. With a USB connection, everything usually happened much faster for us: the power turned off in just 6-8 seconds, but sometimes we had to wait up to a minute. With the network version, the opposite: more often, the shutdown process lasted about a minute, but sometimes everything ended faster.

Print speed

All tests used 80 g / m² paper fed from the drawer (unless otherwise indicated).

Test of maximum print speed (PDF text file, printing 11 sheets, default settings, countdown from the moment the first sheet was released to exclude data transfer time), two measurements with averaging:

ResolutionA priorityTime sSpeed, ppm
600 × 600 dpiSpeed13.843.5
Quality13.943,2
Quality, “Heavy 3 (163—256 g / m²)” paper, bypass tray26.322.8
1200 × 1200 dpiSpeed13.943,2
Quality14.042.9
Quality, silent mode19.630.6
The maximum printing speed with ordinary office paper for all tested options for resolution and priority settings is almost the same and exactly corresponds to the declared value.

The transition to significantly thicker paper, as expected, leads to a noticeable, almost twofold, decrease in print speed, this is necessary for normal baking of toner.

The “mute” (or quiet) mode reduces the speed by about a third, we will estimate the degree of influence on the noise a bit later.

Printing a 20-page PDF A4 file with different connection methods (print priority is “normal”, other default settings):

SettingUSBLAN
Time, min: secSpeed, ppmTime, min: secSpeed, ppm
600 × 600 dpi, single-sided0:3633.30:3831.6
1200 × 1200 dpi, single-sided0:3732,4-
1200 × 1200 dpi, one-sided, mute mode0:4924.5-
600 × 600 dpi, two-sided0:4427.30:4526.7
1200 × 1200 dpi, two-sided0:4626.1-
Printing goes evenly, without pauses. The speed turned out to be less than the declared and received in the previous test, however, the time taken to process and transfer the task is also taken into account here.

Changing the resolution again does not have any tangible effect, and duplex printing reduces productivity by 18-20 per cent, that is, the duplex in the Ricoh P 502 is quite fast.

Turning on the “silent” (silent) mode no longer significantly reduces the time it takes to complete the task since it affects only the print itself, but not the processing transfer. The user is just interested in the task as a whole, and not in any particular stage.

Both connection methods showed almost the same speed, a slight difference is close to the measurement error. But keep in mind: in our test network there was only a printer and one computer, and in the presence of intense traffic from other network devices, the task execution time may increase. In addition, the exchange was carried out in the 1 Gbit / s mode (see above regarding the settings for automatic speed detection).

Printing a 20-page DOC file (text typed in Times New Roman font 10 points, headings 12 points, from MS Word), print priority “normal”, resolution 600 × 600 dpi, other default settings, USB connection.

PrintTime sSpeed
Single-sided34.834.5 ppm
Double-sided39.830.2 ppm
The print speed in this test is also less than the maximum declared and only slightly more than in the case of a PDF file (this indicates that processing of the PDF format is fast - for some of the printers we tested, the difference between PDF and DOC was significant).

The duplex showed an even more worthy result than in the previous test: the speed with two-sided printing decreased by only 12-13 per cent.

Noise measurement

Measurements are made when the microphone is located at the level of the head of a seated person and at a distance of one meter from the printer.

The background noise level of less than 30 dBA is a quiet office space, out of working equipment, including lighting and air conditioning, only the printer itself and a test laptop.

Measurements were made for the following modes:
  • (A) standby mode,
  • (B) one-sided printing,
  • (C) double-sided printing,
  • (D) one-sided printing, “silent” mode,
  • (E) double-sided printing, “silent” mode,
  • (F) the operation of the micro lift drawer,
  • (G) The maximum value during initialization after switching on.

Since the noise is uneven in many modes, the table shows the maximum level values for the listed modes, and through the fraction - short-term peak levels.

ABCDEFG
Noise, dBA31.557.5 / 61.059.0 / 63.055.5 / 60.556.5 / 61.552,554.0
In the standby mode (column A), the built-in fan is running, so the device makes a low sound, which can be heard in a very quiet room and at close range, but against the background of the usual sounds of an office room, it is largely lost. In any case, a uniform quiet noise without pronounced high-frequency components is not annoying.

During operation, another source of noise appears, this time quite noticeable: the lower feed tray is equipped with a micro-lift that raises the front edge of the paper stack before printing and lowers it after completing the job so that the tray can be pulled out safely. This is accompanied by a short, but rather loud and clearly visible roaring sound.

The inclusion of a "silent" (quiet) mode reduces the noise not so noticeably - the effect on other fresh Ricoh printers we tested was more significant, however, the printing speed is reduced by no more than a third.

Feed path test

During the previous test, we printed about 350 sheets on plain paper with a density of 80 to 100 g / m², of which over 50 were printed using duplex. There were no problems, including double-sided printing.

The specification speaks of a limit of 220 g / m² for the drawer, 162 g / m² for duplex and 256 g / m² for the bypass tray.

We will try to work with a paper whose density exceeds the declared one, while we do not set the task of forcing the machine to “choke”, we just try paper with a density that is one or two steps (out of the number we have) that exceed the declared maximum.

The printer did the following tasks normally:
  • single-sided printing, feed on the bypass tray: paper 280 g / m², twice 5 sheets;
  • double-sided printing, drawer feed: 200 g / m², twice 5 sheets.
At the same time, for the 280 g / m² paper, the “Dense 3 (163–256 g / m²)” setting was chosen, and no problems with toner baking were detected.

Envelopes: the instruction allows them to be fed from both the standard (retractable and bypass) trays, however, for optional retractable trays, this type of media is not mentioned as valid.

We found envelopes with a size close to C5, there were no problems with them either. Place them in the drawer tray face up and the bottom edge to the left, in the bypass tray - face down and the bottom edge to the left.

Print Quality

First, a little about the installation of "Print from edge to edge", which is also available from the driver.

The result of its inclusion is very similar to borderless printing, which is found in inkjet photo printers: on the front and side (long) sides of the A4 sheet, the fields decrease to almost zero, and only at the trailing edge remains an image-free strip about 2 mm wide. Perhaps this will be useful when printing some documents with graphic design elements throughout the entire sheet area.

By default, this feature is disabled.

Text Samples

The print quality of purely text documents turns out to be good: the fillings are dense, the contours of the letters are quite even, the raster is noticeable only when enlarged.

Confident readability with all resolution and priority options starts with the 6th size for serif fonts and the 4th size for sans serifs. The 4th point with serifs is difficult to read, the 2nd point, in any case, is impossible to disassemble.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

The toner saving mode (we turned it on from the driver) also does not produce changes that are even noticeable even with the naked eye.

 Ricoh P 502 A4

Accordingly, the toner saving when this mode is turned on is actually reduced to zero.

Samples with text, graphic design and illustrations.:

Mixed documents also work out pretty well. Sometimes streaks are obtained across the movement of the sheet, especially noticeable on dark solid fills, but this is inherent in very, very many laser printers, and in this case, it is not observed on every print.

The differences when changing both the resolution and the priority are as small as in the case of the text sample. Enabling toner saving also makes no changes.

The test strip, pictures

When printing a test strip, the difference in print quality with settings of 600 and 1200 dpi cannot again be called any significant, although in the first case the image looks a bit more contrast. One of the few areas where high resolution gives a noticeable effect is the field with thin lines, especially wavy ones: with a lower resolution, they are thicker, sometimes so much that in some places they come together.

In general, the fillings are dense, the gradients are uniform, the raster is noticeable mainly with increasing, but in extended fields with a dark fill here, sometimes there are strips across the movement of the sheet.

The readability of normal fonts for all quality settings begins with the fourth size (for fonts with serifs, this size is still uncertainly read), inversion - with the fifth. Decorative fonts become more or less legible respectively from the 8th and 9th pins.

The distinguishability of the neutral density scale at the “bright end” is good, from 2% -3%, but worse in dark areas: it ends at 91% -92%. The number of lines per inch is about 90-100.

Changing priorities and activating the toner save mode does not make the observed changes.

Findings

Ricoh P 502 is a compact and well-equipped printer with the high print speed, confirmed by our tests.

It has a considerable number of options, including additional paper trays, which can be up to three, and a Wi-Fi adapter.

The quality of printing documents is slightly lower than that of the best examples of Ricoh printing equipment from among those who visited us, but in comparison with most models of printers and MFPs from different manufacturers, this device looks quite worthy.

The presence of toner cartridges with a sufficiently high resource reduces the cost of printing, and the presence in the supply of a full cartridge is a pleasant and useful bonus for the buyer.

All other functions and features, at least not worse than their counterparts. It’s not possible to print from removable media, but this can hardly be called a function that is in demand in every office on a daily basis.

We will comment on the availability of two Ricoh P 501 and P 502 options with exactly the same characteristics, but with a different resource of consumables: if a consumer needs fast enough and high-quality printing, but in relatively small volumes, then you should look at P 501 - it is much cheaper, however, the cost of a print, determined by consumables (as is often done), will turn out higher, and you will have to buy a toner cartridge to replace the starter very soon, it’s even better to do it simultaneously with the purchase of the print yep.

If it is planned to print regularly and a lot, then the print price becomes the determining factor, and then the more expensive P 502 model considered by us will be the best choice, especially since the toner supply already in the standard configuration of this printer is designed for more than 17 thousand sheets.
