Surface Pro X in the test - why the tablet is not suitable for everyone

Surface Pro X is the latest model in the Microsoft tablet range. Compared to the Surface Pro 7, the display has now grown to 13 inches, and an ARM processor developed in collaboration with Qualcomm is also used.

However, this does not only have advantages, as our colleague Andrzej Tokarski shows in his test, which is why he ultimately cannot fully recommend the Surface, Pro X, for most users.

Larger display

If you compare the Surface Pro X with the Surface Pro 7, the narrower edges to the left and right of the screen are noticeable. This increases the display from 12.3 to 13 inches without making the case bigger. The resolution is 2880 x 1920 pixels, the brightness, wide viewing angles, contrasts and colour rendering are impressive.

There is a built-in folding stand on the back of the aluminium housing. The slot for micro SD cards hidden under previous models is no longer available. There is a slot for SIM cards as standard, and the built-in SSD (128 to 512 GB) is easily accessible. A classic headphone jack has to be dispensed with, which is a shame, especially with a tablet.

The equipment also includes a 5 and a 10-megapixel camera, an infrared camera for unlocking via Windows Hello and two speakers. Optionally, the Surface Pro X can be equipped with a keyboard cover and a stylus. The RAM is 8 to 16 GB depending on the model.

ARM with pitfalls

The heart of the Surface Pro X is the Microsoft SQ1 processor based on ARM, which is cooled passively. Unfortunately, the battery life is only slightly better compared to an Intel Core i5 CPU. Windows 10 Home is preinstalled on the tablet by default, but there are some restrictions.

Natively, only programs specially developed for ARM run, x86 applications run emulated. However, X64 programs do not start at all. For example, the Surface Pro X is not suitable for many current games or Adobe's creative programs.
