According to the latest news from foreign media, the EU legislature recently passed a resolution of 582 votes to 40 votes, encouraging the EU executive agency "European Commission" to take action on the single charging port solution for smartphones. This also means that Apple's recent objections have not been ignored.

For more than a decade, the European Commission, which drafted the EU regulations and has been the administrative department of the agency, has been working to develop a universal charger or charging port, but no mandatory regulations have been formed to date.

According to a plan voted by the European Parliament, EU legislators have asked the European Commission to take one of two approaches: either to re-launch a 2014 plan to harmonize EU charging port standards, or to introduce similar new legislation. European parliamentarians have called on the European Commission to make a decision by July.

In 2009, the European Commission convened four major smartphone manufacturers, namely Apple, Samsung Electronics, Huawei, and Nokia.

The four major companies signed a voluntary memorandum of understanding to use a unified mobile phone charging port from 2011. But because this is not a mandatory requirement, so far, Apple is still using a different charging interface and charging cable.

Last week, Apple expressed opposition to the European Union's plan to unify mobile phone charging ports. Apple said that the unified charging port will inhibit technological innovation, harm the interests of European consumers, and damage the European economy.

However, with the popularity of USB-C interfaces around the world, Apple's opposition does not seem to have much support in the industry.

Many analysts also believed that Apple would gradually expand to smartphones and replace its lightning interface with the USB-C interface that has become the industry standard.
