PlayStation 5 revealed: This is what the new PS5 console will look like

This is the PlayStation 5! Sony used the "Future of Gaming" event to finally unveil the design of the new PS5 console after a long wait. With a futuristic but simple look, you will compete against Microsoft's Xbox Series X at the end of the year.

After Microsoft has been showing off the PC-like case of the upcoming Xbox Series X for months, Sony is now following suit and presenting the PlayStation 5 to the public. The design of the PS5 looks refreshingly modern and slightly futuristic. And not only that, but Sony will also offer the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, a variant of the game console that will do without a 4K Blu-Ray drive. To what extent the price then changes, the Japanese manufacturer has not yet announced. Apart from that, various accessories for the PS5 are announced, such as remote controls, cameras, and headsets.

Technical competition with the Xbox Series X

The combination of the AMD Ryzen processor and Radeon graphics unit already described in detail by Sony works under the hood of the PlayStation 5The eight-core processor based on Zen-2 is said to achieve a clock speed of 3.5 GHz in the final version of the PS5 console, while the GPU with new RDNA-2 technology ensures a total output of 10.28 TFLOPs. There is also 16 GB of GDDR6 memory and a fast 825 GB SSD, which enables transfer rates of up to 9 GB / s (compressed). The main competitor from Redmond competes with very similar technical specifications, which is why the battle of the two could, as usual, choose the game selection.

The Xbox Series X will have a slightly higher clocked AMD processor compared to the PlayStation 5 and will be technically more capable with a graphics performance of 12 TFLOPs. However, Microsoft achieves "only" transfer rates of up to 4.8 GB / s with its 1 TB SSD, which should convince PS5 games with shorter loading times. Both next-gen consoles continue to offer the option of expanding memory. The PlayStation 5 can be upgraded by the user with an additional NVMe M.2 SSD, while Microsoft is expected to offer proprietary 1 TB memory cards for the Xbox Series X.

PlayStation 5 pricing and availability

During the "Future of Gaming" event, Sony fulfilled the wish of many PS5 fans with the design unveiling but remained guilty of information about the price and precise release date. As of today, the official launch for the fourth quarter of 2020, more specifically the Christmas season, is still being targeted. Experts meanwhile expect prices between 400 and 600 euros, with which not only the PlayStation 5 but also the Xbox Series X could book. Sony and Microsoft are covering themselves in order to achieve a tactical price advantage over their respective competitors.

And if we assume that the usual PlayStation 5 will cost about the same as the new Xbox model, then the PS5 Digital Edition may well be 50-100 dollars cheaper. Given the fact that new consoles will not be cheap, such a difference in price for many may be decisive
